An email conversation between June and October, 2001 with my best friend
ROB0630
hi paulo. thanks for the message. you really got my mind working. i've got some notes, but i'm on a coin operated computer so i must be quick and if i get stop abruptly you know why.ok. i really liked your ideas. i've got some to add.so you've outlined an atagonist, i think. what if the protaganist is a homeless guy, whose friends are dying and no one is listening. until death #20: the body is found sitting on the doorstep of someone prominent. He is holding his own head in his lap with 20 carved in his forehead, and his mouth full of "spare change".
of course the antagonist was born poor, because poor people who become rich usually
hate the poor. you and i have talked of that many times.
then the ant. gets caught.
then the ant. and the pro. duke it out in the media, with the ant looking respectable
and the pro. looking dirty and stupid. the trial would take place in the media, with
the ant. winning.
we could follow both of their lives.
ok. i'm out of time. those are my ideas for now. i'd love to see a homeless
protagonist.
wanna work on this with me?
fifteeen seconds and counting.
must use time.
oh oh.
love rob

Howdy! I'd love for you to come visit, so i'll keep my eyes open for cheap fares. i love your ideas, your little treatment you've sent. I don't have ideas on all of them right now, but i like the idea that the medeia dosen't pay attention until a particularly gruesome murder. What if the body was left on the front lawn of a celebrity so that the media could focus on the celebrity's feelings, their journey, more than the actual victim? I also like the idea of the murderer becoming a folk hero. Perhaps this would happen after the climax that you have briefly mapped out.
I have an idea for a character scene for the antogonist. I imagine the story starting with a murder, then him returning home. He's in a good mood.
he turns on the tv with a remote control, and clicks from channel to channel. We see
many images of pop culture, from George W to madonna to all those computer commercials
proclaiming the revolution is here.
he grows bored. he switches on the multi-dvd player, switching from movie to movie.
with a different remote control
he turns on the stereo, from radio station to station. then cd to cd.
he leaves stereo on, he turns tv back on. then back to dvd.
back and forth back and forth.
then he turns on karaoke machine and starts singing "like a virgin."
then he turns on a digital camera, so that he's on the tv, maybe singing with madonna?
images are crossing over, so that all these differnt forms of media are crossing over
and blending into each other, images of the news, of war, of him singing, these media
images are blending together with his real life at this moment. maybe we see images on
the tv of his past murders, mixed together with celebrity news, etc.
he is a conductor of this po mo symphony, playing five different remote controls like
pianos, etc.
Yeah, so that's my idea.
good luck and congratulations on shifting point's next project. sounds exciting. if i
can help with ideas or anything i'd love to. tell me how it goes.
ok. talk to you soon.
love rob.

Violence can not be rationalized. Ever. And absolutely, a violent act cannot be rationalized as revenge for a previous violent act. Let's murder the murderers! A society reorganized to fight terrorism becomes a terrorist society. I Agree! I too will run for the hills. See you there. Thank you for all the good thoughts. It is time, more than ever, for reflective thought. We need dissent, thoughtful dissent, to muddle through this jingoism. It is a scary time, and weak souls like Chretien and Bush are not going to save us. We will save ourselves. Oh oh. Starting to "jingoize" myself ... Anyway, regarding our play. Please revisit it. I sent you some changes a while back. I'd love to see revisions from you. there is a script reading contest out here, for a comapny called Scriptlab. They do this annually. I'm interested. Please let me know
what you think. Oh, i'll forward you what i have for the contest. The deadline is
Oct.31. Also, do you have a new phone number? If you give it to me, I'll call you.
ok good. talk soon.

a sleepover sounds delightful
i'm pretty sure i'm comin back to van for christmas. my parents said they would buy me a ticket. my mom just had hip replacement surgery so i'd really love to see her. well i'd love to see everyone, but she'd be extra special ...
how's your new place?
Is it in erica's basement like you planned? you two must be decorating it delightfully. i can't wait to see it.
i can't wait to live with my lover.
andrea's going to sfu in the spring. so i'm going to be out here all by my lonesome for three and a half months. Boo hoo. she's going to be working with barbara bourget so she's excited. i'm excited too, to really forge a life here by myself. i think we will move in together when she gets back. that's a long way away though.
i'm taking a second city class and i love it! ginette goes there as well, but i haven't
seen her yet, just her name on the wall.
I'm sticking our play into that contest i told you about. probably tomorrow. i made
some litttle changes, just words, no action.
james has been out for two weeks staying with his sister. my goodness the partying. we
drank for three days straight last week and it almost killed me. i'm still recovering.
i've been smoking cigarrettes. only when i've been drinking, but still ... i quit!
right now! no more! whew.
it's been good to see james. i spent thanksgiving with his family. that was ok. he has
three nieces, and the littlest one was just amazing. I loved her. she was sucha
cautious little thinker. just beautiful.
so clear your time (if possible) around christmas. i really want to talk to you about
our play. I think we HAVE to put it up, for our mental health. it would be a regret of
mine if i died without seeing it put up, or putting it up ourselves. we just gotta.
what are you working on right now? or is it down time? please fill me in.
ok. i love you. say hi to toni. take care.
