An email conversation between June and October, 2001 with my best friend

ROB0630

hi paulo. thanks for the message. you really got my mind working. i've got some notes, but i'm on a coin operated computer so i must be quick and if i get stop abruptly you know why.ok. i really liked your ideas. i've got some to add.so you've outlined an atagonist, i think. what if the protaganist is a homeless guy, whose friends are dying and no one is listening. until death #20: the body is found sitting on the doorstep of someone prominent. He is holding his own head in his lap with 20 carved in his forehead, and his mouth full of "spare change".

of course the antagonist was born poor, because poor people who become rich usually
hate the poor. you and i have talked of that many times.

then the ant. gets caught.

then the ant. and the pro. duke it out in the media, with the ant looking respectable
and the pro. looking dirty and stupid. the trial would take place in the media, with
the ant. winning.

we could follow both of their lives.

ok. i'm out of time. those are my ideas for now. i'd love to see a homeless
protagonist.

wanna work on this with me?

fifteeen seconds and counting.

must use time.

oh oh.

love rob

Howdy! I'd love for you to come visit, so i'll keep my eyes open for cheap fares. i love your ideas, your little treatment you've sent. I don't have ideas on all of them right now, but i like the idea that the medeia dosen't pay attention until a particularly gruesome murder. What if the body was left on the front lawn of a celebrity so that the media could focus on the celebrity's feelings, their journey, more than the actual victim? I also like the idea of the murderer becoming a folk hero. Perhaps this would happen after the climax that you have briefly mapped out.
I have an idea for a character scene for the antogonist. I imagine the story starting with a murder, then him returning home. He's in a good mood.

he turns on the tv with a remote control, and clicks from channel to channel. We see
many images of pop culture, from George W to madonna to all those computer commercials
proclaiming the revolution is here.

he grows bored. he switches on the multi-dvd player, switching from movie to movie.
with a different remote control

he turns on the stereo, from radio station to station. then cd to cd.

he leaves stereo on, he turns tv back on. then back to dvd.

back and forth back and forth.

then he turns on karaoke machine and starts singing "like a virgin."

then he turns on a digital camera, so that he's on the tv, maybe singing with madonna?

images are crossing over, so that all these differnt forms of media are crossing over
and blending into each other, images of the news, of war, of him singing, these media
images are blending together with his real life at this moment. maybe we see images on
the tv of his past murders, mixed together with celebrity news, etc.

he is a conductor of this po mo symphony, playing five different remote controls like
pianos, etc.

Yeah, so that's my idea.

good luck and congratulations on shifting point's next project. sounds exciting. if i
can help with ideas or anything i'd love to. tell me how it goes.

ok. talk to you soon.

love rob.

I concur. Other Links
Violence can not be rationalized. Ever. And absolutely, a violent act cannot be rationalized as revenge for a previous violent act. Let's murder the murderers! A society reorganized to fight terrorism becomes a terrorist society. I Agree! I too will run for the hills. See you there. Thank you for all the good thoughts. It is time, more than ever, for reflective thought. We need dissent, thoughtful dissent, to muddle through this jingoism. It is a scary time, and weak souls like Chretien and Bush are not going to save us. We will save ourselves. Oh oh. Starting to "jingoize" myself ... Anyway, regarding our play. Please revisit it. I sent you some changes a while back. I'd love to see revisions from you. there is a script reading contest out here, for a comapny called Scriptlab. They do this annually. I'm interested. Please let me know
what you think. Oh, i'll forward you what i have for the contest. The deadline is
Oct.31. Also, do you have a new phone number? If you give it to me, I'll call you.

ok good. talk soon.

ROB1014

a sleepover sounds delightful
i'm pretty sure i'm comin back to van for christmas. my parents said they would buy me a ticket. my mom just had hip replacement surgery so i'd really love to see her. well i'd love to see everyone, but she'd be extra special ...
how's your new place?
Is it in erica's basement like you planned? you two must be decorating it delightfully. i can't wait to see it.

i can't wait to live with my lover.

andrea's going to sfu in the spring. so i'm going to be out here all by my lonesome for three and a half months. Boo hoo. she's going to be working with barbara bourget so she's excited. i'm excited too, to really forge a life here by myself. i think we will move in together when she gets back. that's a long way away though.

i'm taking a second city class and i love it! ginette goes there as well, but i haven't
seen her yet, just her name on the wall.

I'm sticking our play into that contest i told you about. probably tomorrow. i made
some litttle changes, just words, no action.

james has been out for two weeks staying with his sister. my goodness the partying. we
drank for three days straight last week and it almost killed me. i'm still recovering.

i've been smoking cigarrettes. only when i've been drinking, but still ... i quit!
right now! no more! whew.

it's been good to see james. i spent thanksgiving with his family. that was ok. he has
three nieces, and the littlest one was just amazing. I loved her. she was sucha
cautious little thinker. just beautiful.

so clear your time (if possible) around christmas. i really want to talk to you about
our play. I think we HAVE to put it up, for our mental health. it would be a regret of
mine if i died without seeing it put up, or putting it up ourselves. we just gotta.

what are you working on right now? or is it down time? please fill me in.

ok. i love you. say hi to toni. take care.

Conspiracy by Paulo Ribeiro (2003)

Lets get to the bottom of it
It’s nonstoppable rockable probable

Whats connects this shit I hear on the news to me
Eatin my dinner barely listenin to the tv
I barely give it a thought but now it hits me
It may be a cliché but it’s the media that feeds me
Lies and lies
And diatribes
Good and bad vibes
And funny lines
Many ads selling wines
And others fine grinds
A vacation or appliance
make life more comfy and reliant
And now I’m happy cause I got a new thing
Should this year I buy my sweety pie a diamond ring?

Don’t forget about Afghanistan
Cause now that they’ve kicked out the Taliban
The army is playin catch you can with
Saddam and Osama in a badland caravan
Just listen to me man
High purity drugs for sale at a great discount
But junkies on my streets didn’t adjust their amount

So if he don’t shoot with a buddy than he’s bound to OD
Unless he tests it out to see how potent it can be
And if don’t OD then he’ll need money to score
Buggin at his pusher sayin please man give me more

The Pusher states the price but says if you’re lackin cash
That amount of coin you wont find divin in the trash
But if you find an open window in a basement suite
Take some CD’s and powertools you can sell on the street
Then come back to me at this corner at about 3
Pay me up then you can take a hit from me

World War 3
The flood of cheap drugs from unstable places
World War 3
Killing different people with different faces
World War 3
Unanswered questions global inserections
It all adds up to double-you double you 3

Unanswered questions pop up all the time on many levels
For example the catastrophic terror of the 9-11 rebels
Many facts seem odd and it don’t add up to me
So maybe I can ask you if this should make me feel funny

It’s a September Day, 4 planes are hijacked
It forever changes the laws under which the airlines act
They call it jihad and the population is in shock
It leaves in its wake a world that is rocked

You think that I’m talking about September 11.

But I’m not.

I am talking about September 12, 1970.

Men on planes with weapons took attendants hostage
Entered the cockpit shot the pilot and lost it
4 planes were taken, it was supposed to be five
They were blown up in Jordan and no one survived.

I am talking about September 12, 1970.
Hello?
Should somebody have been a little more careful?

Why wasn’t this a foreseeable risk
Or did they conveniently forget the way that we did
The event was a literal repeat from events 30 years before
They say they didn’t see this one coming and it’s started war

You see back in July when Bush was at the summit in Genoa
Egyptian spies detected plans of a September attack
They pass the info to the Americans for American backing
Look at the facts, advance warning wasn’t lacking.

In the US military manual under standard operating procedures:

As soon as a plane flies off course the authority attempts to contact it
To ascertain what is the matter with the aviation tactic
If there’s a problem or no radio they call the pentagon
To scramble fighter jets to intercept to see what the hell is going on

A response time of an estimated ten minutes or less
But they didn’t call the air force to intercept the off course jets
For over 30 minutes in 1 case and what makes it so hard to understand
Not even 1 employee got a single reprimand

In most nations traditions you fall on your sword and resign
But the guy in charge at the CIA was made the next in line
To the top post of the military of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
He’s argued successfully to boost his budget by half

CIA and terrorists, the connection goes way back
Where do you think the Taliban got the money for the Cadillacs
During the Soviet Afghani conflict the US backed em
Through a Pakistani Agency the US military tracked em
Fed them
Bred them trained them
Tamed them then Armed them to harm them
Named them.
Then said go maim some. In the name of some great one.

General Ahmed: The money man
behind the plan,
worked for Pakistans Intelligence apparatus
For over 20 years bankrolled terrorist projects
like Bin Laden and Atta
Takin US paycheques from some hottie wearing Prada

From the fourth to the 13 of September the General’s an official guest
Of Colin Powell, Richard Armitage and George Tenet
So you’ll permit my scepticism in this situation if you please
Mohammed Atta the hijacker connected to Bush in less than six degrees

Does it seem weird to you that the
FBI
Knows this guy
Wired 100 grand to Atta on demand
To execute some plan

dirty thirty

thoughts on thirty
keep relating it to the context of what's going on these days - politically personally and otherwise
feels good - life is in a good place right now - there are a few things in my relationships, acting work, and family that nag at me as things that still need to be worked on, but overall, i am blessed with fantastic friends and colleagues, and I've had a lot of fun with the last few projects I've worked on
so this is a place where I'm gonna publish my thoughts my rants on various items and you folks out there can connect check out and engage in the dialogue
im having my big party on saturday - and the drinks will pour freely
On my actual Birthday (yesterday), I was at my parents house with Toni, because it's my Dad's birthday as well.
My birthday May 19, 1974
My Dad's is May 19, 1947
Isn't that strange?
One time, I was 10 or something, I was going with my Dad on a plane, the airport lady said wait a second, let me see those passports again. My Dad pulled them out, we each got asked our birthday and told her. She laughed, and commented on that odd coincidence, said it probably meant something very lucky.
